The cultural sites of Al Ain have been UNESCO World Heritage since 2011. The oasis, with its thousands of date palms and its ancestral irrigation network (the "aflaj"), lets you walk in the shade in a surprisingly cool setting. It is a concrete way to understand how life was organised in the desert before the modernisation of the country.
Jebel Hafeet rises to about 1,250 metres. Its winding panoramic road offers wide views over the plain and the city, and the temperature is often milder than below. The city's historic forts, built between the late 19th and early 20th centuries, complete the visit and tell the story of the ruling families.
The traditional market is one of the last places where camels are still bargained over. The atmosphere is authentic and very photogenic, but it remains a real market: respect people and ask before photographing them.
