What to wear in Dubai? The dress code guide
Dubai is a cosmopolitan city, very used to tourists. There is no mandatory dress code, but a few guidelines help you avoid awkward situations and make your stay more comfortable.
In the city and in shopping malls
Light clothing, shorts, T-shirts and summer dresses are common. Out of respect for local culture, avoid very short or see-through outfits in malls and public places. Shopping malls and restaurants are heavily air-conditioned: a thin jacket or a scarf comes in handy.
Mosques and religious sites
To visit a mosque, for example in Abu Dhabi, you need to cover your shoulders, arms and legs, and women must cover their hair. A long, loose garment is enough: some sites lend outfits, but it is better to come prepared.
Beach and pool
Swimwear is for the beach and the hotel pool, not for the streets or restaurants. Bring a change of clothes and a light towel for water activities.
Desert and safari
For a desert safari, choose light trousers or comfortable shorts, light-colored clothes that cover your shoulders, and closed shoes or sandals that stay on well. Bring sunglasses and a scarf for the dust, especially if you do quad biking or buggy. In the evening the desert can be cool in winter: a light jacket is welcome. Our Discovery or Premium Safari comparison details the day.
In your suitcase
- Light cotton or linen clothes in light colors.
- A thin jacket for the air-conditioning and winter evenings.
- A covering outfit for mosques.
- Comfortable walking shoes, sandals, closed shoes for the desert.
- Hat, sunglasses, sunscreen.
